An 18-year-old fan breached security at Eden Gardens during the IPL 2025 opener between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore. The incident took place in the 13th over when Virat Kohli completed his half-century. The fan, identified as Rituparno Pakhira from Jamalpur in Purba Bardhaman, jumped over the barricades from the ‘G’ Block, ran toward the pitch, and fell at Kohli’s feet. Kohli helped him up and hugged him before security intervened and escorted him off the field.
Police arrested Pakhira under Section 329 for unauthorized entry onto the field and breaching security protocols. He was taken into custody, and legal proceedings have begun. Authorities are investigating how the fan managed to bypass multiple security layers to reach the ground. The breach has raised concerns over the effectiveness of crowd control measures at high-profile sporting events. BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla commented on the incident, stating, "Virat Kohli has an incredible fan following."
Royal Challengers Bangalore won the match with Kohli playing a crucial role, scoring a half-century off 31 balls. Eden Gardens had thousands of spectators in attendance for the season opener. Following the security lapse, officials are reviewing protocols to prevent similar incidents in future matches.
